At the scene of most accidents in the United States, the fire department responds by sending a firetruck to the scene of the accident. For automobile accidents, this seems appropriate. However, the same response team from the fire department: a firetruck with at least 4 people: driver EMT, engineer, and other.. At the scene of a bicycle accident, slip and fall, or unconscious person, the main event that provides "medical service" is an EMT with a tackle-box size case of bandages and other supplies gets out of the truck and provides aid to the person or persons in need.

fire trucks have a back-board, but don't have the means to easily transport a vicit to the hospital.

The fireman EMT acts performs triage and will often offer to call an ambulance (which in most states is a private enterprise operated by a for profit company)
